OUGD103 Module Self Evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
One thing I think I have developed a lot through this module is my development skills. I haven't just stopped when I have got to the point when I thought I was 'finished', I left it for a while and came back to it which always turned out to be beneficial as I always found something I weren't so keen on once I came back to them.

What approached to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
Throughout this module it has been more focused on what I will produce in answer to the brief so my method of research was so that it would feed into what I was doing and inform/inspire me to do better or change what I was doing. I found this research quite interesting and rather enjoyed it as it meant I was directly looking for something similar to what I was doing and not having to plough through loads of unnecessary information to find something I could use.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
Again, my development skills throughout this module have been better than they have in previous modules, but I also think this came down to my better handling of my time management throughout. I have made sure that I have kept up with things and not really 'left' anything for too long so I have felt a lot more on top of things.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
I think in general I could have done more research than I have and probably made it more varied rather than keeping it focused. Even though I did like doing the more focused research, I think if I were maybe to have kept it more general it could have changed my outcomes in a better way - or worse. It would probably have allowed me to be a bit more experimental.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
  1. I have kept on top of my blogging a lot better with this module than I have previous ones. Still weren't absolutely on top of it but didn't leave too many things until the last minute so it had made the actual deadline a lot more bearable.
  2. Developing work that bit further has proved worth while with these briefs, so I will make sure I will keep practicing these skills in the future.
  3. I will do more experimenting with different ideas before making definite decisions for what I am doing on longer briefs to see what sort of things I come up with.
  4. I had difficulty booking into the digital print room in time for the final crit for Speaking from Experience so I will make sure I plan ahead and book times well in advance to make sure that I get in in time.
  5. Explore my target audience I am producing a brief for better as I feel I haven't really done this properly this time, and this may help me make better decisions as to what to do.

Speaking from Experience - Final Outcomes

Here are my final outcomes for Speaking from Experience.

Speaking from Experience - Crit Feedback

Overall, the feedback I have got is good, and I am pleased with it. I feel as though there isn't really much more I can do with this project so I am happy enough to leave it as it is and just make sure that I photo it decent enough to show the level I have achieved with it.

Interim Self-Evaluation

List 5 practical skills that you have developed. When have they played useful?
  1. Learnt how to screen print - always something I've wanted to learn and helped to make the Do Day brief possible.
  2. How to research thoroughly and effectively - helps to understand a project better and get better results from it.
  3. Time keeping - when there is so much it is vital to keep on top of everything to make sure that everything is done right and on time.
  4. Developed software skills - in all, which ultimately makes my work look and work better and seem that bit more professional.
  5.
List 5 transferable skills that you have developed. What have you used them for?
  1. Communication skills - both in and out of uni it is important to develop good people relationships so have used this skill to get that.
  2. Time management - to be able to keep on top of the many things going off in life, it needs to be organised and understood.
  3. Organisation - to keep things organised makes life so much easier and helps when things need to be done.
  4. Decision making - faster and more open to making a decision within a brief to help move forward faster and do more.
  5.
List 5 things that you have achieved. How they helped you progress?
  1. Screen printing - new technique that can help make projects to be different to just a normal print.
  2. Group work skills - it is important to work in a group so have been working on improvement. Still not great but loads better than they were.
  3. Not going on Facebook before 9pm - was such a huge distraction so changed to not go on before so have more time to do other things.
  4. Got a First - left a great feeling of achievement and confidence and makes me want to keep up the same level.
  5. Sold some of my work - felt better about that book and helps knowing what other people think that isn't friends/family about what you do.
List 5 problems that you have had to face. How have you over come them?
  1. Bad flat mates - noisy, ignorant, annoying thiefs, dirty, messy, vile - learnt to deal with it and adapted.
  2. Working in a group - really struggled especially with the first one so did things different in the others to help improve.
  3. Working as well as uni - amount of hours I was working was mounting up so dealt with it and improved time management.
  4.
  5.
List 5 facts you have learned. When have they been useful?
  1. Facebook is a huge distraction - stopping getting as much done as I could so stopped going on as much and improved work.
  2. You get what you give - if you put more effort in you get more out in both things you learn and results achieved.
  3.
  4.
  5.
List 5 things that you will never do again. Why?
  1. Never neglect CTS - leaving the tasks too long before doing them makes it much harder to complete them so will always do them straight away.
  2. Never leave blogging for another day - everything builds up and makes it a much more daunting task than it needs to be.
  3.
  4.
  5.

OUGD104 Module Self Evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have learnt a whole variety of skills through this module from the different seminars we had during the beginning of the year on things like colour theory and composition. It has shown me the importance of the basics of Graphic Design, and how the slightest things can make a huge impact over anything.

What approached to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
Throughout the whole year, after each of the seminars I have found that they have made me a lot more visually aware of things around me that I wouldn't necessarily have noticed as much, or maybe just not understood, as I would have prior to these. It has really help to boost my primary research skills over the whole course, and now feel I can make more definite decisions with different aspects of my work without the need to second guess it.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
A strength through this module has to be my involvement with the seminars that we have had, and my efforts to make sure I fully understand them to make sure I can take away the skills I have learnt and apply them throughout the rest of the course.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
My biggest weakness with this module is the fact that I didn't prioritise it as much as I probably should have, leaving me feeling like I could have done a lot better if I had have spent that bit more time doing things, especially with the What is a Line? brief. This is an important lesson I have learnt though and know especially for next year that each of the modules are equally important so I will give them all the same amount of effort rather than prioritising too much.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
  1. I would take what I have learnt from the seminars and investigate them further to give me a better, more wide spread knowledge on each of the subjects. That way I could ensure I feel more confident when working with each of them.
  2. I will prioritise a module like this more, and make sure that I make more time for it to produce more work so that I won't feel at the end like I could have done better because I will know I have put the effort in in the first place.
  3. I would push the briefs further than I have, as I feel like I did what was required, but didn't really push to expand or experiment further.
  4. I will blog any seminar notes and what not the day that I receive them rather than leaving it for another day, as this is a really bad habit I have picked up and want to snap out of.
  5. I will do more research throughout, using more than just the internet.

Here is the final book design I will be submitting to the Leeds International Contemporary Artists Book Fair 2011.
